Madeira: A Floating Garden 300 miles off the Coast of Africa

Tour Manager Alex Hynes sends us this beautiful note from the island of Madeira where she is traveling on our Self-Guided Walking Tour.

Hello from Madeira!

We've enjoyed sunshine and temperatures in the upper 60's all week—typical for this time of year, although the island has been experiencing its driest winter in decades. Still, we can see why Madeira is known as a floating garden. Walking along levadas (the ancient water channels), we are surrounded by lush forests of giant Eucalyptus trees, wild Calas lilies, and we can almost pick our lunches as we go: avocados, maracuja (passion fruit), orange, lemons, bananas are right at our fingertips.

It was no surprise when dinner was served: locally caught scubbard with passion fruit sauce and grilled banana, with a glass of poncha—rum, honey, and lemon.
