Day 1

Monteverde

Transfer from San José to Monteverde. Monteverde Skywalk, 3 miles, easy to moderate

Meeting your private transfer in San José, you depart on the three-hour drive northwest to the town of Monteverde, located at 4,600 feet in the Tilarán mountain range, with a stop en route for lunch at a local restaurant. The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is considered one of the most beautiful and diverse cloudforests on the planet, and this afternoon your introduction to this unique ecosystem is from the top down. A naturalist guide leads you along the Monteverde Skywalk—a forest trail and network of bridges (the longest of which is 984 feet!) and platforms that span the undulating terrain of ravines and water courses. Your guide explains the surrounding flora and fauna as you walk from the forest floor through and above the tree-top canopy, interspersed with dramatic mountain views. An exhilarating zip-line ride is also available (payable locally). You check in to your welcoming hotel set in lush grounds and proceed to dinner later at its excellent restaurant.

Day 2

Monteverde

Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve walk, 3-5 miles, easy to moderate; various afternoon options

This morning after breakfast, you join your guide for a walk through the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. Situated along the Continental Divide, your path follows this geographic watershed that is one of Costa Rica’s richest ecosystems, home to more than 60 species of migrating birds. The enormous trees of the perpetually misty forest are covered in epiphytes—mosses, orchids, ferns—that support an incredible diversity of wildlife. On your guided walk, you may encounter monkeys, coatimundis, agoutis, and birdlife such as toucanets, chlorophonias, and the sought-after resplendent quetzal, in addition to hummingbirds and raptors. On the Pacific side of the Tilarán range, diversity is expressed in more than 100 species of mammals, 400 species of birds, and 2,500 plant species. After a break for lunch at a local restaurant, afternoon options include walking on the extensive grounds of your hotel and enjoying its swimming pool and Jacuzzis, and (payable locally)—a walk in a private reserve, a forest canopy tour, horseback riding, or a night walk.
