Guided Walking : Europe

Italy: Sicily

Moderate Terrain: 4-8 Miles Daily

5.0 (3 reviews)

Italy: Sicily

A rugged island of sun-kissed coves, wildflower-dotted fields, family-run vineyards, and the ancient ruins of 12 civilizations, Sicily offers travelers the true soul of Italy. From the Grecian drama of Selinunte’s seaside temples to the quiet of Oasi Naturale di Vendicari’s secluded bird sanctuaries, it presents a cultural heritage and natural beauty as rich as Mount Etna’s volcanic soil. Explore cities like idyllic Cefalù, medieval Erice, and the baroque “garden of stone,” Noto. Roll up your sleeves and make pasta with a local chef…and, while you’re at it, delight in sumptuous meals scented with fresh jasmine, ripe tomatoes, rosemary, mint, and basil. Sip robust reds and complex whites in the private library of a renowned vineyard, each glass paired with delicious appetizers and fresh olives. Walk quiet trails along spectacular mountainsides and through neolithic burial grounds. Enjoy it all in the company of our expert guides—a 10-day feast of ancient ruins, olive groves, and much more.

Tour Highlights:
  • Wander among the ancient walls and magnificent columns of Syracuse Archaeological Park with an expert historian, visiting its spectacular theater along the way.
  • Hike dark-grey lava tracks lined with wildflowers on the slopes of Mount Etna, Europe’s largest active volcano, and stop for lunch at a rustic rifugio.
  • Explore the cobblestone streets of Erice, a celebrated city breathtakingly sited atop seaside bluffs, with our local guides stopping to visit with a friendly panettiere (baker) along the way.

With his American mother and Sicilian father, Keegan Alagna grew up in a bilingual home in the Umbrian countryside near Assisi. From his childhood on a working farm to post-graduate work in geology, he has always pursued his passion and curiosity for the outdoors, through teaching, guiding, and exploring. He brings his depth of knowledge of geology, nature, Italian history and culture to his walking tours and to his position as a board member on Italy’s premier outdoor group—the CAI, the Club Alpino Italiano.

“Loved Sicily! It’s really another country, not like another part of Italy. This tour has more culture mixed in with the walks, a fact I especially enjoyed since it was our first visit to Sicily. The guides were knowledgeable and flexible in dealing with less clement weather and a family emergency in the group. The walks are accurately described and doable. The food was outstanding, varied and culturally authentic. The hotels were charming and comfortable, occasionally luxurious. We appreciated the emphasis on local businesses and family run hotels and restaurants. We always felt welcome, even when we had limited communications. Highly recommend this tour!”

“Sicily is awesome! Within the constraints of having to transport folks to various sites and time in the bus, the time allocated to hiking seemed fair.”
