Guided Walking : Europe

Austria & Germany: Bavaria & the Tyrol

Easy to Moderate Terrain: 4-8 Miles Daily

Austria & Germany: Bavaria & the Tyrol

From the baroque streets of Salzburg, which once inspired Mozart, to the window boxes bursting with flowers that grace the Tyrol’s erbhof farmhouses, Central Europe is a land of sophistication and charm. Here, majestic Alpine peaks tower above highland meadows freckled with edelweiss and cinquefoil. The extravagant castles of “mad” King Ludwig II present a storybook vision of rococo excess: spectacular gardens, gilded fountains, and lavish chambers of tapestries. Gentle trails and gondolas lead to dramatic mountainside settings—the brilliant white of Stubai Glacier, cascading waterfalls, and the impeccably preserved village of Neustift. A tour of medieval Innsbruck reveals some of Europe’s most beautiful streets, including the renowned pastel rowhouses of Maria-Theresien Strasse—just the place to stop and indulge in some kaffee mit kuchen (coffee and cakes). A journey in this region offers the perfect balance between rural and city life, natural beauty, and cultural encounters—plus a hearty mountain breeze to fill your lungs and warm your heart.

Tour Highlights:
  • Visit Europe’s most charming Alpine villages from Bavarian Mittenwald, Germany to Tyrolean Alpbach in Austria.
  • Glide through Konigsee, the “King’s Lake,” in the heart of Berchtesgaden National Park aboard an electric boat, stopping by the world famous “echo wall” to listen to flügelhorn players perform.
  • Raise a glass and savor a platter of hearty German fare during a Heimatabend—a traditional Bavarian evening of music and dancing at a local pub that’s brewed its own beer since the 17th century.
