Alaska: Kenai Peninsula

An explorer’s dream, Alaska is America’s last great frontier—and an absolute pleasure to discover on foot, in sea kayaks, and by boat. Begin your adventure in Seward, a harbor town filled with shops and galleries, before moving on to the Kenai Fjords National Park, where you walk along the base of Exit Glacier literally surrounded by spectacular scenery—jagged mountain ranges, ice-blue lakes, and hidden coves carved by retreating glaciers. A cruise on Resurrection Bay frames the region’s diverse wildlife (puffins, bald eagles, seals, and humpback whales), while a stop at a remote island allows for a special salmonbake dinner. Next, hike up Lost Lake trail, winding through coastal rainforest of moss-covered hemlock and spruce. Pausing for a picnic lunch at the top of a glacial valley, you gain unobstructed views of snowcapped mountains and perhaps grazing Dall sheep. Opt for a river-rafting jaunt along the Kenai, a fishing excursion, or a walk to Russian River Falls to spot salmon. A visit to Homer, a town with breathtaking views, is followed by an unforgettable sea kayaking experience. With expert instructors leading the way, paddle in Kachemak Bay, passing remote coves and the Gull Island seabird colony. During your stay, wilderness lodges (nestled beside glacial bays and pure rivers) and memorable meals (featuring local seafood and ingredients) reflect the spirit of Alaska.
