Panama: The Canal, Highlands & Islands à la Carte

Walking through Panama—from colonial outposts to spectacular routes crossing land, sea, and the Panama canal—you’re completely immersed in diverse ecosystems and unique cultural heritage. The journey begins along the famed Pipeline Road in Soberania National Park, site of the Audubon Society’s 1996 world Christmas bird count, when more than 500 species of birds were identified in a period of 24 hours. Aboard a specially equipped expedition boat, you ply the waters of the Panama Canal, keeping an eye out for sloths, crocodiles, and howler monkeys along the shoreline. Invigorating walks lead through the foothills of Baru Volcano National Park, and the lush cloudforest of the Chiriquí Highlands. Journey back in time and visit a historic trapiche (sugar mill) that still follows traditional practices. On the virtually untouched island of Boca Brava (nestled in the Chiriquí archipelago), you have the option to swim in the warm turquoise waters or snorkel among colorful fish along coral reefs. A piragua (dugout canoe) journey up the Chagres River leads to a remote village where the Embera people greet you in customary fashion. A rainforest resort, secluded seafront boutique hotel, and highland lodge showcase each region’s breathtaking beauty, assuring comfort off the trail.
