Greece: The Southern Coast

Whitewashed villages overlooking sparkling seas, ancient monuments towering atop cliffs, secluded beaches and hidden coves, sun-soaked olive groves and hillside vineyards—the simple, breathtaking beauty of Southern Greece. Arriving in Athens, you are immediately surrounded by history: the Acropolis, Parthenon, Tower of the Winds…the list goes on and on. After a guided tour of important sites, journey south to centuries-old ports and review the day’s catch (over some ouzo) with local fishermen. With Mt. Taygetus as a stunning backdrop, hike along well-traveled trails and mule paths to a deserted monastery, the church of Agia Theodoroi with its 18th-century frescoes. In Mani, follow historic routes to ancient villages mentioned by Homer and explore a traditional tower house. Visit Gythion, a town founded, according to legend, by Heracles and Apollo, and the sea caves of Pirgos Dirou. Dine at local tavernas, sampling stuffed vine leaves, lamb, freshly caught seafood, vegetable dishes, moussaka, and, of course, baklava. With seaside accommodations along your route, the tranquil waters of the Mediterranean— and a relaxing hammock—are never too far away.
