England: The Lake District

The tranquil beauty of the English Lake District has inspired authors, poets, and artists for centuries. Following in the footsteps of renowned children’s author Beatrix Potter and Romantic painter John Constable, pass through the prehistoric settlements, deep valleys, and thick woodlands of the Lake District National Park. Explore the lakeside village of Pooley Bridge—an early settlement dating back to the Celts—and from the hamlet of Dockray, journey on foot to Aira Force, the region’s most famous waterfall. Enjoy Dove Cottage and an in-depth tour of Rydal Mount, William Wordsworth’s homes, admiring the gardens he designed. Next, stroll along well-worn paths—bordered by ancient stone walls—past quaint white cottages, rustic barns, and remote villages. The views of Ullswater and Coniston, two of the most beautiful lakes in all of Cumbria, are simply stunning. Naturally, there is time to pause—for a picnic of traditional English fare by a mountain tarn, for a pint with a local farmer whose family has been working the land for generations, or to breathe in the scent of wildflowers carpeting the valleys.
